From time to time
people ask me, what are you reading these days and what are you learning? So today I’ve decided to answer that question
here…this is what I’m reading. If any of
this resonates with you, I’d highly recommend picking up this book and giving
it a chance.
I’m currently reading a book called In a Pit with a Lion
on a Snowy Day by Mark Batterson. Perhaps it holds the record for the most interesting titled book I’ve
ever read. When most people hear the
title, they immediately get a puzzled look on their face and usually the first
word out of their mouth is What?! However, I’m convinced that other than
the living breathing Word of God, there could not be a better book for me to
read and really contemplate during this season of my life.
The book is inspired by a character found in 2 Samuel 23
named Benaiah. Benaiah finds himself
chasing a lion down into a pit, then despite the snow and slippery ground, he
caught the lion and killed it. A pretty
incredible feat, I’d say. I’m intrigued
how the author takes this rather obscure event in 2 Samuel and is able to write
an entire book that captivates and challenges its readers as it does. The idea of chasing lions comes up throughout the book. The author uses this phrase to challenge us to
take calculated risks and stop running from what scares us most. In doing so, we’re able to seize the God-ordained
opportunities that cross our paths.
This is one of those books that I’ve been slow to read, and
I’m still only halfway through it. There
is so much meat in it that I find myself stopping often to reflect, re-read,
and “chew on” the challenging and thought-provoking concepts in this book.
designed to help us pursue our God-sized dreams and become a lion chaser. These seven skills include: overcoming adversity, unlearning fears,
embracing uncertainty, calculating risks, seizing opportunities, defying odds, and
looking foolish. I am typically a little skeptical of any book
that comes across as being a “self-help book,” however, this book has exceeded
all of my expectations.
It’s making me think. It’s challenging
me. It’s drawing me closer to the Father
as I contemplate where He has me and where He’s taking me in this season. I’m challenged to increase my trust on Him
and lean back against Him more so than ever before. My dependence upon Him is growing. He’s doing a new thing in me and I can’t wait
to see where this journey leads me next.
Can I borrow it when you’re done?
How are you doing by the way? Have you embraced the silence, or are you fighting it?
Sounds like a great book Kayla-
I think I will look up 2 Samuel 23 right now!
=)
Just started it today… so far… great book. Thanks for sharing friend. Praying that He keeps bringing stuff out of this book and implanting truth and life on your heart. Blessings friend!
Not to mention writing 23 pages in your journal on a beautiful beach in the Bahamas!!! It’s still on my list to read ever since you talked about it while we “sunned” 🙂
