A Thanksgiving Story:

Once upon a time there was a large family in Kenya.
Now this was no ordinary family.
Instead it was 10 First Year Missionary students and their 3 leaders.
Every one of them came from very different places scattered across the US and even Canada.
The family was brought together by God and called to this place called Kenya to serve Him and love His people.

Soon the end of November would come and everyone in the family knew what this meant.
It meant that it was time to celebrate Thanksgiving.
This would be a Thanksgiving to remember for all.
We would celebrate in style in Kenya.

They faced a challenge as they attempted to gather all of the traditional American foods, especially with things like turkey.
But they persevered and found everything needed for the feast.

The family, who resided in Kibera, found it best to go away for a couple of days to get some much needed rest and to celebrate together.
They arrived at the missionary guest house and were all in awe at such things as an American looking home, a huge kitchen, nice beds, and hot showers.

The night before Thanksgiving the kitchen was full and everyone had a part.
The boys took on the responsibility of cooking dinner while the girls used every dish available to make the pies to be devoured the following day.

Finally the big day had arrived.
Anna S. rose at 5:30 to tend to the beastly bird and by 6am it was on its way to the oven.
It cooked for the next 6 hours and filled the house with a pleasant mouthwatering aroma.
The boys woke up next, earlier than the rest of the team, to prepare a scrumptious breakfast for the girls who would be in the kitchen the rest of the day.

Everyone had a part in preparing the feast.
We had turkey, stuffing, and gravy prepared by Anna S; green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole prepared by Rachel; broccoli rice casserole prepared by Melissa; macaroni & cheese, cheesy potatoes, and dinner rolls prepared by Anna J; corn prepared by Alysha; salad prepared by Connie; broccoli salad and sweet tea prepared by Alicia; deviled eggs prepared by Kayla and Elisabeth.
Then for dessert we had: pecan pie and apple crisp prepared by Rachel; French silk pie and Jello salad prepared by Elisabeth; lemon meringue pies prepared by Anna J; pumpkin pies and fudge prepared by Kayla; pumpkin rolls prepared by Alysha; and vanilla ice cream that Anna S opened for us!

Many of the girls approached the kitchen with a little apprehension and the phrase, “I’ve never done this before” was heard throughout the day.
But none-the-less, everyone did a fantastic job and our mothers would have been proud!
Little did they know that they’d send their daughters to Africa and they’d become domesticated!
